Proposal to introduce a Front Zero-Speed Indicator (FZSI) system on motor vehicles to signal complete vehicle stops to vulnerable road users. The system activates exclusively when vehicle speed equals 0 km/h and deactivates when speed exceeds 0 km/h. A horizontal light strip of minimum 30 cm width positioned at the upper windshield edge or front roofline provides the signal. Primary color is red (wavelength 620–750 nm); secondary option is high-luminance turquoise or green if required by applicable legislation. Brightness adjusts automatically via ambient light sensors. The system integrates with existing vehicle CAN-bus networks and serves as direct communication for autonomous vehicles.

SLR will deliver Stage 2/Step 2 to GRE-96 by end of January 2027 for submission to WP.29 in November 2027. SLR’s mandate ends December 2027. A new informal working group on Supporting technical experts on Lighting Regulation (SteLR) will be established, chaired by EC and vice-chaired by Germany, to address remaining open points from SLR and TF-GP. Main topics include visibility of signalling functions, glare prevention, apparent surface, energy saving, replaceability and sustainability, and V2X communication.

Proposal to amend para. 3.3.1.2. to specify that the value for ‘a’ in the approval marking shall be at least 5 mm, and add a new para. 3.3.4.4.1. establishing requirements for labels used for additional approval markings specific to the device, including durability for the useful life of the device, legibility, indelible letters and figures, and durable fixing that cannot be removed without destroying or defacing the labels.

FIA expresses concerns about logos on side marker lamps, stating that distraction in road traffic is a main reason for accidents and injuries. From a traffic safety perspective, there is no need for logo presentation on light sources or lamps, as their primary function should remain strictly focused on visibility and safety. FIA recommends that if Contracting Parties see a need for illuminated logos on side marker lamps, these should appear in a size not visible on moving traffic, only from close distance, with a maximum total size of 4 cm.

Annotated provisional agenda for GRE’s ninety-fifth session (20-23 October 2026). The session will address development of UN Global Technical Regulations and Rules; simplification of lighting and light-signalling UN Regulations; amendments to UN Regulations Nos. 48, 53, 74, 86, 148, 149, 150, 10 and 65; activities of informal working groups and task forces on simplification, light sources, electromagnetic compatibility, glare prevention, and autonomous vehicle signalling; International Whole Vehicle Type Approval and electronic database developments; and election of officers for 2027.

Report on a Slovak research project conducted from September 2022 to October 2023 on the impact of front brake lights on road safety. The Front Brake Light was installed on 3,072 vehicles, with 2,715 drivers participating and covering 38.24 million kilometres. Survey results show 78 percent of drivers and 86 percent of pedestrians support general introduction of the Front Brake Light into regular traffic. Both driver and pedestrian respondents reported the feature enhances safety at pedestrian crossings, reduces uncertainty in various traffic situations, and improves traffic flow smoothness.

Proposal to amend para. 4.5.5.(d) to clarify that stop lamps, direction indicator lamps, reversing lamps and side-marker lamps shall not incorporate a manufacturer logo. The amendment addresses an unintended gap in the regulations whereby side-marker lamps could theoretically be approved with a manufacturer logo, whereas it had never been the intention of GRE to allow side-marker lamps with a manufacturer logo. Contracting Parties agreed during the April 2026 session that an amendment to clarify this would be appropriate.

Proposal to amend para. 2.4.10. to expand the definition of a pair to include vehicles of categories M, N and O with one or more lamps extending from left to right; amend para. 2.4.11. and its sub-paragraphs to redefine single and multiple lamps to refer to interdependent lamps marked “Y”; amend para. 2.4.12. to redefine interdependent lamp system and add definition of interdependent lamp marked “Y”; amend para. 5.5. and its sub-paragraphs to add that a pair shall be considered as two lamps and to establish requirements for manufacturer logos; amend para. 5.7.2.2.; amend para. 5.7.2.3.; delete para. 5.7.2.4.; amend para. 5.18.2.; add new para. 4.7.3. to UN Regulation No. 148 to require that a pair containing one or more light emitting surfaces extending from left to right shall contain at least one light source on each side; and amend para. 4.8.1.3. to clarify photometric measurement procedures.

Proposal to replace “multiple separate light sources” with “multiple light sources” in the provision governing rear position lamps reciprocally incorporated with stop lamps.

Proposal to editorially correct approved proposal GRE/2024/21/Rev.1 and WP.29/2025/112. Editorial corrections amend paragraph 1 to include reversing projectors and direction indicator projectors in scope. New paragraph 3.1.2.10 requires drawings showing relative position of direction indicator projector and lamp. Tables 1 and 2 are amended to add reversing projector and direction indicator projector entries.

The agenda includes corrections to UN R150-01, baseline documents for UN R53, R74, R86, and R48, simplification of paragraphs 6.×.4 and 6.×.5, transitional provisions, harmonisation of requirements, apparent surface considerations, and direction indicator visibility improvements. The next meetings are scheduled for June and December 2026, with a potential September 2026 session in Tokyo.

This document addresses rear direction-indicator lamps mounted at low positions on vehicles. Republic of Korea reports increased public petitions and media articles regarding visibility and recognition concerns, particularly in congested traffic and for vehicles with higher driver seating positions like SUVs. UN Regulation No. 48 specifies direction-indicator lamp height requirements: not less than 350 mm and not more than 1,500 mm, or up to 2,100 mm under certain structural conditions. The presentation seeks feedback on similar issues from other countries and manufacturers.

OICA presents research findings on direction indicator perceptibility when stop lamps activate simultaneously. Key findings indicate that spatial separation between functions, increased direction indicator intensity, and relative signal dominance improve perception. Research shows stop lamp luminance can reduce direction indicator recognition, particularly in near-field viewing. OICA concludes that minimum size requirements proposed in the German proposal exceed available evidence and may create unintended consequences without demonstrated safety benefits.

The document analyzes separating direction indicators and stop lamps. It examines how drivers recognize lighting functions through visual perception and notes that irregular lamp shapes increase reaction time. The document states that “apparent surface”, currently defined only through manufacturer drawings, lacks perceptual grounding because it ignores luminance distribution and edge contrast. It recommends minimum lamp sizes and distances based on visual acuity, minimum luminance requirements, and a 3:1 luminance contrast between functions when spatially merged in one lamp.

A literature review on direction indicator visibility presents research on vehicle lighting design, visibility, and signalling. Sources include studies on overlapping and interlocking of lights, and dynamic evaluation of automobile rear lighting configurations.
