Proposal to insert new paras. 0. and 0.1. introducing Supplement 2 to account for vehicles of categories X and Y and vehicles with a manual mode operating at speeds above 6 km/h equipped with an Automated Driving System, and amend para. 1., footnote 1, to reference the Consolidated Resolution on the Construction of Vehicles (R.E.3.), document ECE/TRANS/WP.29/78/Rev. 8, para. 2.

The amendment extends application to vehicles of categories X and Y, and vehicles with manual mode operating above 6 km/h equipped with an Automated Driving System. The Regulation was originally drafted for vehicles with driver and manual driving controls; the amendment extends application to vehicles without driver and without manual driving controls. For vehicles equipped with an ADS other than categories X and Y, no special provisions or exemptions apply in any driving mode.

The report presented at GRSP in May referenced 3 different bus v. bus, low overlap front collisions, with fatal outcome
o Q: Did the buses involved comply with UN R 29 and/or UN R 93?
o A: None of the 6 buses involved in these accidents complied with UN R 29 or UN R 93

Proposal from the GRSG task force on Automated Vehicles Regulation Screening to update the footnote reference to vehicle categories and otherwise address the establishment of ADS vehicle subcategories X and Y. ADS vehicles are not subject to exemptions or special provisions under this Regulation.

List of items approved during the remote GRSG July session but subject to confirmation via absence of objections following the session. Under the “silence procedure”, if a Contracting Party expresses dissent, the GRSG approval is nullified.

Proposal to amend requirements for front underrun protection devices to address aerodynamic body configurations.

The text was prepared by the expert from the European Commission (EC) to update and amend the provisions on Frontal Underrun Protection (FUP), to extend to more vehicle models the safety and aerodynamic benefits from the recent evolution of cab (flexibility and rounded shape)

Revisions to the proposal to update Part III of UN R93 to enable approval of truck cabs where the front underrun protection is integrated in the motor vehicle (in order to improve aerodynamic performance). The proposal includes transitional provisions from 1 November 2025.

This proposal would define the forward reference point as being the same transverse location where the force is applied. This results in FUPs where (in the case of cab fronts that are curved) at least 400 mm must be maintained along the front contour of the cab, instead of the foremost point. The proposal includes transitional provisions from 1 September 2020.
