The Task Force on Vehicular Communications held a hybrid meeting on 23 January 2026, with presentations from Japan, CAICT China, and Car-to-Car Communications Consortium covering communications approaches to improve protection of vulnerable road users. The 14th VCTF meeting is scheduled for Wednesday 11 June 13:00–16:00 CET to discuss tests and ideas for improving VRU protection through communications. The Future Networked Car Symposium will be held in hybrid format on 9 July 2026 at Palexpo Geneva, jointly organised by UNECE and ITU, with the WP.29 related session in the morning of Thursday 9 July.

The Task Force on Vehicular Communications held its thirteenth session on 23rd January 2026 in Geneva. Presentations on Vulnerable Road Users protection were delivered by Japan, China, and Car2Car, addressing VRU accident analysis, pilot projects, national standardization frameworks, and collective perception approaches. Common themes included sensor limitations, functional safety needs, and harmonized communication standards. The Task Force agreed to continue discussions at its next session.

China’s activities on vulnerable road user (VRU) applications include four protection scenarios: roadside infrastructure detection via direct communication; vehicle-based detection via sensor sharing; VRU-equipped V2X device direct communication; and cellular communication via cloud server. China developed national standards GB/T 44286.1-2024 and GB/T 44286.2-2024 specifying collision warning scenarios, and ITU SG21 requirements for VRU service using vehicle gateway. Demonstrations tested pedestrian and electric bicycle protection across Shanghai, Deqing, and Beijing. Key implementation challenges include sensor perception accuracy, direct communication device installation barriers and low penetration, and cloud construction responsibility allocation for cellular communication solutions.

International Telecommunication Union – Radiocommunication sector (ITU-R) Working Party (WP) 5A would like to introduce itself to UNECE WP on Automated/Autonomous Connected Vehicles (GRVA). ITU-R WP 5A addresses the radio communication issue of Land Mobile Service and is responsible for studies related to the Land Mobile Service and wireless access including RLANs (Radio Local Area Networks). Within WP 5A, Working Group (WG) 5A-5 addresses the issues pertinent to new technology, such as ITS (Intelligent Transport Systems), CAV (Connected Automated Vehicles) and MTC (Machine Type Communications).
