This document provides considerations on Artificial Intelligence in the context of road vehicles, adopted by WP.29 in June 2024 based on ECE/TRANS/WP.29/2024/34/Rev.1 as amended by Annex VI of ECE/TRANS/WP.29/1179. It includes definitions of AI-based systems used in automotive products, an overview of AI use cases provided by Industry, and interactions of AI-related principles with the New Assessment Test Methods. The document recommends that AI-based algorithms be implemented considering safety, security, environmental performance and societal impacts; that software updates from AI functionality shall not significantly modify certified functions without resuming certification; that AI systems be validated and assessed before deployment; and that data protection regulations be respected.

Proposal to establish uniform provisions concerning approval of vehicles of categories M₁–M₃ and N₁–N₃ with regard to Driver Control Assistance Systems (DCAS):

• Set minimum safety requirements for DCAS—driver-operated vehicle systems providing sustained lateral and longitudinal motion-control assistance while requiring driver supervision and responsibility
• Require DCAS to monitor driver engagement through hands-on and eyes-on detection, escalate warnings for disengagement, and bring the vehicle to safe stop if driver unavailability continues
• Require the system to provide information enabling driver supervision, avoid over-reliance, remain controllable, and detect system boundaries
• Address functional safety under non-fault and fault conditions, HMI design, system failures, lane positioning, manoeuvres (driver-initiated, driver-confirmed, system-initiated), speed limit compliance, and safe headway assistance
• Require validation including audit of manufacturer documentation, physical tests on track and public roads, and in-service monitoring of safety-critical occurrences
• Require software identification via R1XXSWIN
• Require manufacturers to report safety-critical occurrences and maintain annual monitoring programs

Request for authorisation to develop a new GTR.

The document proposes a multi-pillar approach for ADS safety validation: audit and safety-by-design assessment, simulation/virtual testing, track testing, real-world testing, and in-service monitoring and reporting. It recommends high-level safety requirements addressing ADS performance of the Dynamic Driving Task under nominal, critical, and failure scenarios; safe user interactions; and ODD boundary management, recommending scenario-based assessment of behavioural competencies without prescriptive technical performance limits to accommodate diverse ADS configurations and operational design domains.

Proposal to align the UN R155 Interpretation Document with the proposal to extend the scope of UN R155 to Category L vehicles.

Proposal to introduce provisions for identification of buses and trucks equipped with an electric drivetrain consistent with existing regulated identification for Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG), Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) and Compressed Hydrogen (H2) fueled trucks and buses.

Proposal to enable use of a rigid plastic speaker simulator in lieu of the current deformable simulator to facilitate and reduce the costs of testing.

Proposal to clarify the conditions under which Enhanced Child Restraint Systems must be tested in a vehicle body shell and to allow installation of a dummy protective device on the UN R129 bench in the dynamic frontal test with a universal booster cushion.
