Japan submitted this proposal to clarify the
requirements of the Regulation on rear underrun protection devices. This proposal is based on informal document GRSG-101-10-Rev.1.

This proposal from Japan is a modified version of GRSG/2011/31, which was submitted for the purpose of preventing road accidents due to the inability of drivers of vehicles with an extremely high eye point to view small vehicles (e.g. motorcycles) in front.

Japan plans to issue a regulation on 1 April 2012 along with fiscal incentives to promote the use of advanced emergency braking systems on heavy-duty vehicles. Mandatory installation will be phased in starting from 1 November 2014.
