The GRE Taskforce on Autonomous Vehicle Signalling discussed Automated Driving System marker lamps, including Japanese input on Vienna Convention compliance, vehicle categories under the 1958 Agreement, mandatory rear installation requirements, variable intensity settings, daytime/nighttime definitions, side marker lamp configurations, agricultural vehicle applicability, rooftop installation alternatives, and operational conditions adjacent to direction indicators. Several technical issues remain unresolved. An informal proposal for a hybrid regulation is expected for the 95th GRE session. The next meeting is scheduled for 18 June 2026.

Proposal from the GRE EMC informal working group. The modifications extend the regulation’s scope to vehicles without driver compartments or manual controls. Changes include new definitions for ADS test configurations, updated immunity-related functions to address ADS sensor performance, and revised test conditions for vehicles with active ADS features. Additional reporting requirements for ADS systems are introduced in regulatory forms.

Seven UN Regulation proposals were reviewed for consistency and errors. Issues identified include: unclear optical-logical signal transitions in R64; redundant definitions that should reference RE3 via footnotes; inconsistent ADS activity terminology requiring standardization to “when an ADS feature is active”; incorrect Category Y vehicle references in R51; spelling and numbering errors across multiple regulations; inconsistent Mass in Running Order definitions; and unclear testing provisions requiring improved cross-referencing. Corrections are necessary for regulatory robustness.

The GRSG-TF-AVRS held an online meeting to review open items for submission to GRSG-131. Decisions included removing a proposal for R39, amending R43 regarding windscreen definitions, adopting amendments to R46, R151, R159, R166, R167.00, and R167.01, and adopting changes to R61, R73.01, and R73.02. No further meetings were scheduled before GRSG-131 in April 2026. OICA, UK, and France volunteered to present documents at the session.

Proposal to amend UN R10 to enable application to Automated Driving System (ADS) vehicles, including new paragraphs defining ADS requirements, test configurations, and immunity-related functions. Changes address vehicles without drivers or manual controls, establish ADS test procedures for laboratory environments, and specify equipment operation during testing. Amendments cover electromagnetic compatibility testing requirements, failure criteria, and documentation standards for ADS-equipped vehicles.

TF-AVRS screened UN Regulations for automated vehicle application, focusing on UN R83 and UN R154. Changes enable automated driving system vehicles to perform driver-conducted tests like coast-down tests and roller bench cycles. Modifications include defining vehicle users as drivers or ADS users, adjusting driver mass calculations for X and Y categories, and updating testing mode terminology. TF-AVRS proposes amendments to 17 UN Regulations and seeks guidance on addressing remaining topics.

Proposal to update UN R49 to accommodate Automated Driving Systems (ADS). The supplement modifies definitions, mass calculations, warning systems, and testing procedures to apply to vehicles without human drivers. References to drivers are replaced with “vehicle user” terminology, and special provisions are added for ADS-equipped vehicles in testing and operational requirements.

This Supplement proposes to update UN R154 to accommodate vehicles fitted with Automated Driving Systems (ADS), specifically categories X and Y. Amendments include new definitions for ADS-related terms, modifications to testing procedures, and updated references to vehicle construction standards. Driver-related systems are renamed to account for vehicles without human drivers. Special provisions establish requirements for ADS road load determination and testing modes, while messaging systems are adapted to send signals to ADS instead of or in addition to driver notifications.

The document discusses the status of autonomous driving system (ADS) regulations across multiple expert groups. GRBP completed all regulations; GRE adopted R48 and R45; GRPE, GRSG, and GRSP have working documents under review for WP.29’s 199th session; GRVA completed remaining regulations. GRBP, GRPE, GRSG, and GRVA task forces will disband after June 2026. GRSP AVRS will continue work on Y category crash requirements and GRE AVSR on ADS marker lamps. Work on ESC will be handled separately without a dedicated group.

Supplement 6 extends the regulation to vehicles without drivers or manual controls, including category X and Y1 vehicles and those with ADS operating above 6 km/h.
