Working draft to define and regulate the installation of lane-keeping assistance systems under UN R79.

Draft proposal to introduce provisions related to an “automatically commanded steering function”.

Text prepared by the experts from the LKAS small drafting group to introduce new definitions and the related LKAS requirements in to the text of UN Regulation No. 79.

Proposal to remove certain design restrictions that impede the application of new technologies, especially related to trailer power steering systems and the use of energy from the towing vehicle.

Proposal to add a maximum supply line pressure of 900kPa when the compressor is at cut-out during testing of electronic braking systems (EBS). The aim is to prevent trailer EBS failure warnings/shut downs when detecting excessive supply line pressure.

Proposal to clarify the definition of a “variant” in order to avoid unintended interpretations of the certification requirements that could result in additional financial and administrative costs. As currently worded the approval of a Test Group requires individual certification for each part contained within the Test Group. Some Test Groups can contain in the region of 30 part numbers. This would align the practice for brake discs and drums with that for brake linings.

This proposal adds text adopted during the December 2014 LKAS group session that will need to be incorporated, likely through an informal document, to the formal text submitted to the GRRF (document GRRF/2015/2).

The LKAS group proposes several options for the transitional period for consideration and eventual decision by the GRRF. Industry proposes a three-year period before entry into effect while some government representatives propose immediate entry into effect for new type approvals since they believe current LKAS systems already meet the requirements.
