Revised proposal (superseding document GRE/2014/7) to introduce the possibility of interdependent lamps for dedicated motorcycle lamps. The proposal reflects recent amendments to Regulations Nos. 6 and 7 and meets the visibility angle requirements of Regulations Nos. 50 and 53. The concern is that the rear trunk lid commonly used for four-wheeled vehicles may be adapted for future scooter type motorcycles to secure the storage space for helmet, etc. Current lamp requirements impose design constraints that may hamper the proper development of such storage features.

The amendment also reflects recent amendments to Regulation No. 48, Supplement 2 to its 06 series of amendments and further includes some editorial corrections of current Regulation No. 53 texts. Proposal to amend UN R3 in order to address the recent introduction of devices with a reduced light distribution to be mounted no higher than 750 mm. 1. The proposal would also require colorimetric and photometric testing to type approve each variation in color of an approved device.

Currently, the lamps are required to meet photometric parameters after one minute and 30 minutes of operation. Under normal use, these lamps are operated for no more than six minutes at a time. Front fog lamps may be reciprocally incorporated with the main beam and in some cases, it is required to switch off the front fog lamp when the main beam is operated to avoid overheating of the device. In this case, Regulation No. 19 requires a “/” in the approval marking. However, the current text in paragraph 6.3.7 of Regulation No. 48 requires that “it shall be possible to switch the front fog lamps ON and OFF independently of the main-beam headlamps”. This proposal is intended to remove the conflict between the texts of the two regulations.

The Working Party on General Safety (GRSG) has approved a proposal to require the automatic activation of hazard warning lights in buses and coaches in the event of excess temperatures in the engine and/or other compartments. This proposal would align UN R48 with this new requirement so a complete set of amendments can be presented for adoption at the March 2015 session of the World Forum.

Proposal to allow cornering lights to remain on as long as the vehicle speed does not exceed 10 km/h as a measure to improve visibility during slow manoeuvres.

Proposal to introduce flashing side marker lamps for vehicles of categories M2, M3, N2, N3, O3 and O4 with the objective of improving the safety of vulnerable road users by informing them about the intended turns of buses and heavy goods vehicles and their trailers.

According to Regulation No. 119, cornering lamps that are equipped with light sources other than filament lamps, are required to meet the relevant photometric requirements after one minute and after 30 minutes of operation. However, under normal traffic conditions, these lamps are operated for no more than 6 minutes. This proposal would therefore would require the second test after 10 minutes instead of the current 30 minutes, in accordance with standard SAE J1889.

Proposal to correct a series of editorial errors.

Text prepared by Italy to delete all obsolete references in Regulations Nos. 53 and 74 in order to avoid confusion and possible incorrect application of the requirements containing these references. The deletions cover references to Regulations Nos. 1, 8, 20, 56, 57, 72, 76 and 82. These regulations have all been “frozen” (i.e., they do not apply to new type approvals) and their functions have been taken over by Regulations Nos. 112 and 113.

Proposal to align the requirements of UN Regulation No. 10 with regard to electromagnetic compatibility of trolleybuses with the electrical standards in Annex 12 to UN Regulation No. 107.
