Analysis of door opening warning systems (DOWS) fitted in 150 independently rated Euro NCAP models from 2023–2026. DOWS is offered in 87% of models (67% as standard, 19% as option), with 13% unavailable. Systems vary widely in capability, from information-only functions to door retention, with some not enabled by default. Harmonised minimum requirements aligned with the Euro NCAP dooring test would build on systems already on the market.

Proposal to amend paragraph 5.10 of the Russian version to clarify provisions on the protection of the tank according to collision references for tank integrity, aligning the Russian version with the English and French versions.

Provisional agenda for the 132nd session of the Working Party on General Safety Provisions to be held at the Palais des Nations from 28 September to 2 October 2026. The agenda covers amendments to regulations on buses and coaches (UN R107), safety glazing (UN R43), awareness of proximity of vulnerable road users (UN R46, UN R151, UN R158, UN R159, UN R166, UN R167), gas-fuelled vehicles (UN R67, UN R110), devices against unauthorized use and alarm systems (UN R116, UN R161, UN R162, UN R163), identification of controls (UN R121), heating systems (UN R122), event data recorders (UN R160, UN R169), international whole vehicle type approval (UN R0), and vehicle categories. The agenda also includes exchanges of views on vehicle automation, election of officers, and other business items.

Proposal to amend para. 5.12. to require the manufacturer’s management system encompassing cyber security to comply with the relevant requirements of UN R155 with regard to total distance indicated and total distance values, and to require threat and associated vulnerabilities to be analysed according to the management system with regard to total distance indicated and total distance values, with proportionate mitigations implemented including or equivalent to mitigation 7 referred to in Annex 5, Part B, Table B5, threat 20.4. of UN R155. The proposal aligns odometer anti-tampering and security management requirements with UN R155 and clarifies that mitigating measures must be implemented regardless of risk value assessment.

Proposal to amend para. 2.12. to replace the reference to ISO [CD] 19206-4 with ISO 19206-4:2020 and specify an adult bicyclist target, and amend para. 5.3.2. to replace the reference to ISO [CD] 19206-4:2018 with ISO 19206-4:2020, clarify requirements for demonstrating BSIS performance for smaller bicycles and smaller bicyclists differing by up to 36 per cent from nominal dimensions for the adult bicyclist target through physical testing using a child bicyclist target, simulation sufficiently validated by physical testing, or another documented means sufficiently valid and accurate to establish BSIS performance for a child bicyclist target.

Agenda for the 132nd session of the Working Party on General Safety Provisions, scheduled 28 September to 2 October. The session will address amendments to UN R107, UN R43, UN R46, UN R67, UN R110, UN R116, UN R161, UN R162, UN R163, UN R151, UN R158, UN R159, UN R166, UN R121, UN R122, UN R125, UN R0, UN R160, UN R169, UN R58, UN R105, UN R73, UN R39, and UN R58. The session will also cover vehicle automation, periodical technical inspections, driver distraction and drowsiness warning systems, and door open warning systems.

Proposal to amend para. 2.3. to clarify that devices mandated by other UN Regulations are not seen as surveillance camera-monitor-recording devices if not explicitly mentioned in the respective other Regulation. The definition has existed since Supplement 2 to the 04 series entered into force on 18 June 2016. Camera-based systems have become widely used for fulfilling reversing motion monitoring requirements of UN R158, creating unintended regulatory overlap. The 07 series of amendments clarified this distinction, but the 06 series did not. The proposal introduces the same clarification into the 06 series and improves legal certainty and consistency across amendment series without introducing new technical requirements or affecting the current level of safety.

Status report on the Informal Working Group on Event Data Recorder and Data Storage System for Automated Driving. The IWG has developed requirements for UN R157, UN R185/GTR, UN R160, and UN R169. DSSAD activities will be removed from the IWG on EDR/DSSAD and assumed by a new IWG on ADS2, pending WP.29 decision. EDR Step 2 work includes proposals for a 03 Series of Amendments to UN R160 and Supplement 3 to UN R169. EDR Step 3 will consider data survivability, triggering sensitivity, data elements, and EDR for category L vehicles, with a proposal planned for April 2027.

• Amend para. 1.4. to clarify recording obligations where sensors cannot meet format requirements specified in Annex 4 but data elements are available,
• Amend para. 5.3.1.2. to permit writing Last Stop trigger data to volatile memory accommodating at least five most recent stops on a first-in first-out basis until another trigger occurs or vehicle master control switch is deactivated,

Report on a workshop organized by the Kingdom of the Netherlands on 25 August 2026 in Brussels to address transparency provisions in UN R43. The workshop discussed current transparency requirements, alternative test procedures for reflection, definitions such as chameleon effect, and amendments to working document ECE/TRANS/WP.29/GRSG/2026/20. Participants agreed transparency provisions are not direction-dependent, confirmed the importance of driver visibility, and noted the absence of measurement procedures or objective criteria for reflection levels. The proposal is to add a footnote to clarify requirements for the driver’s forward field of vision, with future evaluation of whether more objective measurement provisions on reflections are needed.

Presentation on truck underrun accident prevention examining active safety system performance and rear underrun protection crashworthiness. ADAS testing of seven modern vehicles (2025–2026) at speeds 56–130 km/h toward stationary truck targets in four scenarios found systems currently unable to reliably prevent collisions on motorways. Conspicuity testing of trailers identified reduced performance with offset approaches and darkness. Crash testing of European UN R58.03 rear underrun protection against US IIHS Toughguard at 56 km/h demonstrated latest European RUP incapable of preventing underrun, with recommendation that regulation mandate tougher RUP standards.

Proposal to consolidate definitions applicable to both Part I and Part II into a single chapter, add component and separate technical unit requirements to Rear-View Camera Systems and Detection Systems, establish requirements for software update references and identification, and merge amendments from Supplements 1–6 into the original text. Current type approvals remain valid. Changes do not affect stringency or content requirements.

Proposal to add Component and Separate Technical Units (STU) approvals regulatory supplement to UN R158 for devices for means of rear visibility or detection. The changes do not affect the content stringency and keep current UN R158 type approvals valid. The proposal replaces the complete UN Regulation text due to the number of changes required, incorporating text merged from Supplements 1 to 6 into the original text, with tracked changes and comments marking modifications outside the direct scope of the SIG-C&STU typical for clarity, corrections or consistency items which shall not affect stringency.

Proposal to add component and separate technical unit approvals regulatory supplement to UN Regulation No. 158. The changes do not affect stringency and keep current type approvals valid. The proposal replaces the complete regulation text and includes definitions, requirements for close-proximity rear-view mirrors, rear-view camera systems, and detection systems for vehicles of categories M₁–M₃ and N₁–N₃. Field of vision requirements, system activation, driver interface specifications, and test procedures are specified, with backing event duration defined as meeting speed of 16 km/h, distance of 10 meters, or duration of 10 seconds.

Proposal to insert new title establishing three parts of UN R159 (vehicles with regard to Moving Off Information System, vehicles with regard to installation of approved type systems, and Component or Separate Technical Unit), amend contents and definitions to add Component and Separate Technical Unit approval routes, insert new Part I establishing specifications and test procedures for vehicles, insert new Part II establishing specifications and test procedures for vehicles with approved type systems, insert new Part III establishing specifications and test procedures for Component or Separate Technical Unit types, amend approval provisions to accommodate three approval types, renumber existing paragraphs, and insert new Annexes 1 through 7 with communication and information documents for each approval type.
