ISO Standard 11439 concerns “High pressure cylinders for the on-board storage of natural gas as a fuel for automotive vehicles”. ISO 6722 concerns ’60 V and 600 V single-core cables — Part 1: Dimensions, test methods and requirements for copper conductor cables".

Pursuant to research conducted in Japan, this document recommends amending UN R110 with regard to:

1. Welded metal cylinders
2. Steel cylinders (CNG-1 cylinder) and Steel liner cylinders (CNG-2 cylinder)
3. Accessories fitted to the cylinder, and
4. Indication of cylinder and accessories fitted to the cylinder.

The document also raises the possibility of further considerations concerning LNG cylinders.

Proposal to establish an expert working group to review and update the provisions of UN Regulation No. 110 in order to produce a new consolidated, harmonized version of the regulation.

Proposal to require an exterior protection on cylindrical gas tanks. Under the current regulation, such exterior protection may be fitted at the discretion of the manufacturer. The intention is to increase protection against corrosion of cylinders in response to a corroded cylinder explosion in Germany.

Supplement 1 to the 01 series included requirements for the positioning of LNG tanks. While the Netherlands believes that mounting the LNG fuel tank 200mm above the road surface is broadly adequate; this proposal aims to ensure that the fuel tank cannot, under any normal driving or stationary working situations, come into contact with the ground. The new wording provides more definitive conditions, including the possibility of a vehicle having one or more flat tires as well as for those vehicles that have ‘kneeling’ capability or variable suspension, both of which lower the frame of the vehicle closer to the ground.

Proposal to regulate the discharge direction of pressure relief devices (PRD) on CNG containers in response to a fire accident in the Netherlands in which the PRD produced a long horizontal jet flame for several minutes posing a risk to other road users and surrounding buildings.

Presentation on efforts to prevent natural gas powered vehicles from being certified as “dangerous goods vehicles” (ADR) through education of the UN ADR working party (WP.15) on liquefied and natural gas fuel systems and development of regulatory language to address WP.15 concerns.
