Status report on research activities of the Informal Working Group on ACPE GTR. Canada is conducting ongoing tests with three vehicles examining accelerator application rates, distances to obstacles, and false-positive interventions. The United Kingdom plans to contribute information from Transport London research. South Korea is preparing presentations on documented cases with 10Hz EDR data and KNCAP 2026 tests. Germany is planning vehicle benchmarks and subjective tests. Japan is conducting vehicle evaluation tests using two passenger vehicles with three target types based on UN R175 01 series test procedures. The next coordination meeting is scheduled for 10 November 2026, with an in-person meeting in Tokyo proposed for February 24–26, 2027.

Draft report from the fifth meeting of the informal group on Automatically Commanded Deceleration (ACPED) for Automated Vehicles, held online on 8 September 2026. The report covers research activities by Contracting Parties including vehicle testing by Germany, Japan, Canada, UK, and South Korea. Discussions addressed unwarranted ACPE activation in various scenarios, including intersections and railway crossings. The next meeting is scheduled for 10 November 2026, with an in-person meeting planned for Tokyo in either January or February 2027.

The 4th session of the Acceleration Control for Pedal Error Global Technical Regulation was held online on 8 July 2026. The agenda was endorsed without comment. The draft report for the previous meeting was revised as ACPE-GTR-03-06/Rev.1. Japan presented planned research activities including testing in reverse direction. Canada clarified that false positive test procedures still need to be defined and aim to provoke undesired ACPE intervention. Germany, Korea, Norway, and United Kingdom reported on their respective research status. ACPE-GTR-02-07/Rev.1 was presented. The next confirmed meetings are scheduled for 8 September 2026 and 10 November 2026.

The 3rd session of the Acceleration Control for Pedal Error Global Technical Regulation met online in May 2026. No vehicles have been certified under UN R175. Korea presented interim research on pedal operation speed and misapplication accident patterns, with results expected in 2026. Multiple contracting parties are conducting ongoing research on activation distance ranges, pedal application rates, and wall obstacle activation. The group endorsed research priorities and agreed to reconvene online on July 8th, 2026, with an in-person meeting planned for January 2027 in Japan.

Transport Canada presented ACPE research testing comparing three vehicles—2025 Tesla Model 3, 2025 Subaru Forester, and 2025 Toyota Crown Signia—against UN R175 minimum performance requirements and real-world pedal misapplication crashes. Analysis of 14 EDR data cases revealed none would require ACPE intervention under current R175 criteria. Testing included UN R175 procedures and recreation of six real-world crash scenarios. Proposed 2026 research includes investigating radar signatures of wall structures, obstacle distances exceeding 1.5 metres, accelerator pedal application rates and travel, and false positive test procedures.

Transport Canada ACPE Research Plan 2026 sets out testing expected August and September 2026, with preliminary results expected in November. Testing addresses sonar sensor response to different materials, ACPE system characterization including coarse and refined screening with varying accelerator application rates, distances, target types, speeds, and directions, baseline response with no obstacle, and false positives using test vehicles 2026 Passport, 2026 Solterra, and 2026 Prius.

Research plan for ACPE vehicle performance. Tests using actual vehicles will evaluate ACPE performance of vehicles on the Japanese market. Tests specified in UN R175 01 series will be conducted, along with tests under extended conditions with partially expanded test parameters. Test procedure for creeping vehicle specified in UN R175 01 series, paragraph 6.6.2, will be conducted. Activation limits of ACPE will be confirmed using distance to target and pedal application speed as test parameters. Tests will use one 2026 model year Suzuki Swift and one 2026 model year Daihatsu Move. Vehicle procurement by end of September, testing late October to November, data analysis by end of December, summary of research results early January.

The Korea Automobile Testing & Research Institute presents two planned ACPE GTR studies. Study #1 on normal pedal operation speed range is in pre-R&D phase with data collection ongoing from elderly drivers; results will not be presented in 2026 due to required data processing and insufficient time for statistically meaningful analysis. Study #2 analyzes pedal misoperation speed using 10 Hz EDR data from nine real-world crash cases where manufacturers concluded no vehicle defects. Analysis is in progress with results to be shared at subsequent meetings as additional cases are confirmed.

No vehicles have received certification under UN R175-00/01. The document lists representative ACPE-equipped vehicle models from various manufacturers and markets, detailing their sensor configurations, target objects, and operation speed ranges. Sensor types include ultrasonic sonar, monocular camera, stereo camera, and milli-wave radar. Target objects are stationary objects and pedestrians. Vehicles exhibit variation in forward and rearward equipment and low-speed braking function inclusion. Performance definitions differ by OEM and are not directly comparable across manufacturers or to UN R175 requirements.

The informal working group on Global Technical Regulation for Acceleration Control for Pedal Error will meet on May 8th, 2026 via MS Teams from 12:00 to 14:00 CEST.
