Proposal to extend the provisions for rear-view mirrors under UN R125 to camera-monitor devices, including the cameras, holders, and housings.

UN Regulations 21, 26, and 125 have provisions that relate to mirrors and/or the program to enable the approval of camera-monitor systems as a replacement for conventional mirrors. This document discusses changes that will be required under the proposed CMS revisions to UN R46.

Text prepared by the International Organization of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers OICA in coordination with the Informal Working Group Camera Monitor Systems (CMS II) to clarify the treatment of camera-monitor systems and similar indirect vision devices under Regulation No. 125. Presently, UN R125 exempts rear view mirrors from the requirements concerning obstructions to the driver’s forward field of vision. This proposal would clarify that rear vision camera-monitor systems benefit from the same exemptions.

Proposal to align UN R125 (driver forward field of vision) with the amendments to UN R46 under development to enable the approval of camera-monitor systems as indirect vision devices in place of conventional mirrors.
