Proposal to delete the 2m width requirement for parking lamps, to allow the installation of side-marker lamps combined with retro-reflectors on the lateral foremost position on semi-trailers, and to enable the approval of reversing projections (projection of patterns on the road).

The expert from GTB presented revised amendment proposals that introduced reversing projections in UN Regulations No. 148 and 48 (ECE/TRANS/WP.29/GRE/2024/20/Rev.1), as well as supporting statistical data (GRE-92-04). One expert believed that the accompanying statistical data did not provide sufficient evidence for road safety benefits of reversing projections. GRE suggested an improvement to the provision that the reversing projection should not negatively affect rear camera system performance as defined in UN Regulation No. 158. Finally, GRE adopted the proposals, as amended by GRE-92-32, and requested the secretariat to submit it for consideration and adoption to the November 2025 sessions of WP.29 and AC.1 as part of draft Supplement 22 to the 06 series, draft Supplement 9 to the 07 series, draft Supplement 7 to the 08 series and draft Supplement 2 to the 09 series of amendments to UN Regulation No. 48, as well as draft Supplement 5 to the 01 series of amendments to UN Regulation No. 148. GRE also agreed to inform the Working Party on General Safety Provisions (GRSG) about these amendment proposals, as they mention UN Regulation No. 158 which is within the scope of GRSG.

GRE noted that the Vienna Convention (1968) would need to be aligned with the adopted proposal. GRE agreed to contact the Global Forum for Road Traffic Safety (WP.1) ant its secretariat with the aim to identify the proper procedure for amending the Vienna Convention.

21. The expert from GTB tabled proposals which introduced reversing projections. These proposals were submitted in a package with the corresponding amendments to UN Regulation No. 48 (ECE/TRANS/WP.29/GRE/2024/20, GRE-91-05). During an in-depth discussion, experts made numerous comments on the proposals. The expert from the United Kingdom did not see the need for reversing projections in the presence of reversing lamps. Based on the GRE feedback, the expert from GTB issued GRE-91-25 in which he summarized the comments received and previewed revised proposals that would be submitted to the next session. GRE invited all experts to check GRE-91-25 and provide any additional comments to GTB before 15 November 2024, with the aim to prepare a new working document for the next session.
