Proposal to establish a new UN Regulation for type approval of motor vehicles and components using liquefied hydrogen fuel systems. The regulation applies to heavy-duty vehicles (categories M2, M3, N2, N3) and specifies requirements for liquefied hydrogen storage systems, pressure relief and shut-off devices, and vehicle fuel systems. Testing procedures include proof pressure verification, boil-off control, vacuum loss tolerance, and bonfire tests. Vehicle systems must prevent hydrogen accumulation in passenger compartments, limit exhaust hydrogen concentration, and include warning systems. Approval marks and periodic technical inspections are required.

GRSP | Session 77 | 5-9 May 2025

30. After an initial discussion of ECE/TRANS/WP.29/GRSP/2025/7 and informal documents GRSP-77-30-Rev.1, GRSP-77-39, GRSP-77-46, GRSP-77-49 and GRSP-77-50, interested experts met informally during the week and came back to GRSP on the last day of the meeting with a set of revised proposals. GRSP adopted informal document GRSP-77-39 with a corrigendum to supplement 1 to the 02 series of amendments to UN Regulation No. 134. However, after the end of the session, the secretariat, in consultation with the Chairs, decided it was more appropriate to fix this mistake with an erratum, without the need for submission to WP.29 and AC.1, as the original proposal did not contain the mistake. GRSP also adopted informal documents GRSP-77-30-Rev.2 and GRSP-77-46-Rev.1 , (as reproduced in annex VI) and requested the secretariat to submit them as proposals for the 03 series of amendments to UN Regulation No. 134 and Supplement 3 to the 02 series of amendments to UN Regulation No. 134, respectively, to the November 2025 sessions of WP.29 and AC.1.

GRSP | Session 78 | 1-4 Dec 2025

41. The expert from OICA introduced informal document GRSP-78-15-Rev.1 amending ECE/TRANS/WP.29/GRSP/2025/41 with a proposal for a new UN Regulation on liquid hydrogen. GRSP adopted the proposal and requested the secretariat to submit it to the June 2026 sessions of WP.29 and AC.1. GRSP thanked the experts from TF-H2 for their work on this new UN Regulation, which would provide a type-approval basis for hydrogen vehicles propelled with liquefied hydrogen.
