113. The representative of Canada, as secretary of the IWG on Electric Vehicle and the Environment (EVE) pointed out that heavy-duty in-vehicle battery durability was the most significant work being performed by the IWG on EVE and had been occupying most of the group’s efforts.

114. The representative of Canada recalled that UN GTR No. 22 specified test procedures and minimum performance requirements for the battery durability of electrified light-duty vehicles, and that the proposal subject to vote by AC.3 accomplished a similar goal for heavy-duty vehicles.

The representative of Canada informed WP.29 that this draft new UN GTR recognized important differences between the light- and heavy-duty vehicle sectors, including the variations in powertrains found amongst the HDV sector and the potential for HDV power to be used for functions other than propulsion like refrigeration of cargo or various power-take-off accessories.

116. The representative of Canada detailed that this UN GTR provided a harmonized methodology by which the health of the battery can be monitored over time and includes minimum performance requirements for the durability of the battery in an optional annex.

The proposal (ECE/TRANS/WP.29/2025/149, ECE/TRANS/WP.29/2025/150 and ECE/TRANS/WP.29/AC.3/60), was established in the Global Registry of the 1998 Agreement on 12 November 2025 by consensus vote of Australia, Canada, China, EU, India, Japan, Republic of Korea, Norway, Russian Federation, Türkiye and United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. San Marino and United States of America abstained from voting.

118. The representative of Canada thanked AC.3 for establishing a new UN GTR in the Global Registry. He informed the IWG on EVE already started to work on the next amendment to the UN GTR to improve provisions related to vehicle selection, definitions and abbreviations and minor revisions on soak temperature, boundary conditions and test methods based on new testing results, with intended submission at the 200th session of AC.3 in November 2026.
