This document presents a comprehensive technical roadmap on smart and bidirectional charging for electric vehicles. It reviews standards governing interfaces between vehicles, electric vehicle supply equipment and electricity grids; identifies remaining gaps in standardisation, certification and testing; and recommends actions for global harmonisation. The roadmap focuses on light-duty vehicle categories (M₁, M₂ ≤5 t and N₁), covers communication protocols including ISO 15118-20 and Amendment 1, grid codes across multiple regions, and battery data identifiers under UN GTR No. 22. Key findings include: proprietary solutions and vendor lock-in remain prevalent; ISO 15118-20 has not yet achieved broad interoperability in practice; grid-code conformance regimes for AC bidirectional charging lack mature certification pathways; and end-to-end conformance testing remains immature in major regions. Main recommendations include establishing a Global Task Force on Bidirectional EV Charging, clarifying capability communication, ensuring regulations track standards evolution, extending electromagnetic compatibility requirements to partial-load operation, and maintaining consistency between automotive and energy-sector cybersecurity requirements.
Proposal to amend para. 9.3.2.1 in annex 4 to correct a paragraph number reference from ‘9.2.3.7.’ to ‘9.3.2.7.’ in the text describing measurement principles. The correction addresses a typographical error introduced in WP.29/2025/94.
Proposal to amend Appendix 2, paragraph 2.1. in the 02 series and paragraph 2.1.2. in the 01 and 03 series to correct typographical errors introduced in the French versions of WP.29/2025/100, WP.29/2025/101 and WP.29/2025/102.
Proposal to amend para. 2.11.1.2.2. in annex B6 of the original series to correct typos, amend para. 4.4.6.2. in annex B8 of the original series to correct notation, and add footnotes below Table 3b in para. 6.7.2. of the 01 series regarding fuel types and vehicle specifications, aligned with the 03 series.
Proposal to replace Annex 1 with revised engine and vehicle characteristics and information concerning the conduct of tests. The new annex specifies requirements for supplying information in triplicate, including details on general vehicle identification, masses and dimensions, energy converters and power plant description, transmission, suspension, and tyres and wheels, along with associated footnotes defining terms and providing technical specifications.
Terms of Reference for the UNECE EV fast- & smart-charging cluster, a joint activity of WP.5 e-mobility Task Force and the IWG on EVE. The cluster aims to promote user-friendly, safe and scalable adoption of fast and smart charging functionalities of electric vehicles and their integration in the energy system. Task A develops a new WP.29 resolution on DC Fast Charge Power Curve (FCPC) of electric vehicles in three phases: Phase 1 establishes a harmonized test procedure for light duty vehicles; Phase 2 develops requirements for consumer information and minimum performance requirements; Phase 3 investigates expansion to heavy duty applications. Task B inventories the need for harmonization of other recharging capabilities and recharging documentation, including collecting existing international standards and initiatives, identifying discrepancies and gaps, and issuing a harmonized standardization/regulatory roadmap for smart and bi-directional charging of EVs by vehicle category. Chairmanship is held by The Netherlands from January 2025 to October 2027.
This document addresses open issues regarding the Fast Charge Power Curve Resolution draft still under technical discussion where no consensus has been reached by the F&SC Cluster at submission of ECE/TRANS/WP.29/GRPE/2026/52. Open points cover measurement system requirements, test vehicle conditions, test preparation, vehicle preparation phase, parameter definitions, test evaluation tolerance criteria, and data processing and calculation of KPIs including maximum charging power, average charging power in 10–80% SoE range, power curve from 10% SoE to full charge, charging duration, and recharged energy or range in 10 minutes.
Note by the secretariat reporting on GRPE activities. WP.29/AC.1 adopted all proposals including a new UN Regulation on tyre abrasion. WP.29 agreed to host a demonstration of EV retrofitted vehicles at its 200th session in November 2026. The first meeting of the IWG on prioritization identified topics for discussion including common understanding of prioritization, high-level review of current activities, possible approaches to define prioritization, criteria for establishing new groups, and how to enhance efficiency of informal working groups and task forces. Mongolia acceded the 1958 Agreement. Light duty fuel efficiency improvement trajectory and HDV fuel efficiency measurement harmonization were tackled in GRPE. The UNECE secretary was invited to join a UNEP partnership on battery circularity to be launched in 2027.
