Comments from IEC on the informal document GRE-69-15/Rev.1 (“Priority of Discussion on Technical Requirements for IWVTA and Draft Report to IWVTA Informal Meeting”)

Proposal to introduce the following into Regulation No. 48:
a) General definition of ‘tell-tale’, as also currently defined in Regulation No. 121;
b) Requirement that the specifications of the tell-tale (location, identification, symbol, illumination and colour) shall meet the relevant requirements of Regulation No. 121;
c) Provision that tell-tales shall always provide an optical signal, thus aligning with Regulation No. 121; however, it is suggested to allow additional signals (auditory or any equivalent signal);
d) New definition of a ‘failure tell-tale’ and stating the mandatory presence of such tell-tale for the daytime running lamp in certain cases;
e) Editorial changes clarifying the situation for a few other cases in Regulation No. 48, where apparently also a ‘failure tell-tale’ was meant.

Given the mandatory requirement for a daylight running lamp tell-tale, this proposal replaces the word “operating” with the word “failure” in describing the failure tell-tale of paragraph 7.4.2.(b). This proposal complements the similar proposal for Regulation No. 48 contained in informal document GRE-70-09.

Proposal to clarify that in the case of a stop lamp, the failure indicator of paragraph 6.1.7.2. is a “failure tell-tale” rather than an “operating tell-tale”. This proposal complements the similar proposal for Regulation No. 48 contained in informal document GRE-70-09.

Editorial correction to the presentation of the collective amendments to selected lighting regulations proposed in document GRE/2013/55.

In document GRE/2011/35, China proposed to update the ‘resistance to atmospheric agents’ test under UN R112 by applying the spectral energy distribution of sunlight as defined in CIE Publication No. 85:1989, Table 4. Following up on its initial response (document GRE-68-41), SAE explains its opposition to the proposal.

Series of proposals to revise the positioning specifications for direction indicators, marker lamps, and reflectors on trailers (O category) and to make clarifications.

As part of the work on establishing an International Whole Vehicle Type Approval (IWVTA) system, Japan has noted differences between European and Japanese vehicle registration (license) plates.
