This is a proposal to introduce a new HID category (D9S) into Regulation No. 99 with dual-level operation, i.e. with two defined wattage values and corresponding luminous flux values. This new category (D9S) is the first light source in R99 that has two defined power levels. When this dual-level light source is used in a headlamp which is being approved according to Regulation No. 98, the testing and approval provisions must be clearly defined in this Regulation to avoid misinterpretation. Therefore, it is proposed to amend the relevant paragraphs of Regulation No. 98 to take into account the multi-level aspects of D9S and possible future multi-level light sources in Regulation No. 99.

Proposal as approved by the GRE to replace the current variety of test mixtures used to simulate dirt during the testing of lamps with a single uniform mixture. In addition, the proposal would replace the term “beech wood” with the phrase “produced from beech wood” to improve clarity.
