12. (b) Amendments to the Convention on Road Traffic (Vienna, 1968)

32. GRE was briefed on the activities of the Global Forum for Road Traffic Safety (WP.1) and its Group of Experts on drafting a new legal instrument on the use of automated vehicles in traffic (LIAV) on the issue of automated vehicles (AVs) (ECE/TRANS/WP.1/189, paragraphs 23 to 29). In particular, GRE noted the position of the International Federation of Pedestrians (IFP) on the introduction of AV signals (optical or audible): IFP is opposed to signals indicating the intended actions of AVs to pedestrians, but is not opposed to signals indicating the status of the vehicle (autonomous mode on or off) as long as pedestrians are not expected to change their behaviour in the presence of this signal (informal document No. 7, March 2024).
