The text was prepared by the expert from the European Commission (EC) to update and amend the provisions on Frontal Underrun Protection (FUP), to extend to more vehicle models the safety and aerodynamic benefits from the recent evolution of cab (flexibility and rounded shape)
50. The expert from EC presented ECE/TRANS/WP.29/GRSG/2019/19 proposing to update the provisions on frontal underrun protection to be approved as integrated part of the vehicle, and to allow more a rounded shape of cabs for better aerodynamic performance. The expert from OICA introduced GRSG-117-36 highlighting the need for keeping exceptions for vehicles of Category G and proposed to cover the issue of the scope in a separate proposal.
51. Following detailed technical discussions and adjustment of language used (GRSG-117-55), GRSG agreed to submit it to WP.29 and AC.1 as proposal for 01 series of amendments to UN Regulation No. 93 for consideration at their June 2020 sessions and thus providing for reconsideration by GRSG at its 118th session.
33. The expert from the European Commission introduced document ECE/TRANS/WP.29/GRSG/2020/10, the proposal for amendments to UN Regulation No. 93 on Front underrun protection (FUP).
34. The representative of OICA presented GRSG-118-28, containing OICA’s position on proposed amendments to UN Regulation No. 93 as envisaged through document ECE/TRANS/WP.29/GRSG/2020/10, and reaffirming OICA’s support for document ECE/TRANS/WP.29/2020/83.
35 GRSG agreed to resume consideration of document ECE/TRANS/WP.29/GRSG/2020/10 at its next session in October 2020, possibly as a revised proposal based on bilateral discussions.
36. GRSG reviewed ECE/TRANS/WP.29/2020/83 on amendments to UN Regulation No. 93 and agreed to re-submit it for consideration and vote to the WP.29/AC.1 session in November 2020.

The Chair of GRSG recalled the outcome of the discussion under agenda item 9 of the July 2020 session of GRSG (ECE/TRANS/WP.29/GRSG/97, paras. 33-36), concerning the development of amendments to UN Regulation No. 93, reminding that, as a first step, a proposal (ECE/TRANS/WP.29/2020/83) would be considered by WP.29 at its November 2020 session, while the second step would require additional consideration.
71. 72. The expert from the European Commission provided an update on the development of an additional proposal to amend UN Regulation No. 93, informing GRSG that consultations and exchange of information among Contracting Parties and the industry were underway on outstanding matters, including front underrun protection of off-road vehicles, proposals for removing exemptions for N2G and N3G vehicles. He invited interested Contracting Parties and the industry to contact the European Commission for participating in the discussion on developing a proposal.
73. GRSG agreed to keep this item on the agenda of its next session in October 2021.
