Report of the 11th session of the IWG on AI held on 2 September 2026 online. The session discussed the status of the draft reference document, with the USA formally objecting to the refresh plan (AI-11-03, AI-10-04) and insisting that AI-09-06/Rev.3 presented to WP.29 was the only valid baseline document. The co-chairs and majority of experts, including the UK, Germany, France, Canada, the Netherlands, EU Commission, OICA/CLEPA, and SAE, supported using AI-11-03 as the baseline. The group decided to establish two small drafting groups to address green text in sections 2 and 4, with changes submitted through change request forms for review during plenary sessions.
The session covers adoption of the agenda and brief report of the 11th session, discussion of work plan for formal document submission to the June 2027 WP.29 session, discussion of draft reference document AI-11-03 including modifications and change requests to sections 1 through 4 and annexes, presentations on the use of AI in the automotive sector, discussion of timeline and future sessions, and small drafting group discussions on 28 October.
Study on image generation method to support evaluation of automated driving systems. Fine-tuned an image generator on the Zenseact Open Dataset using 100,000 road-scene images annotated with 3D bounding boxes. Demonstrated ability to generate plausible images reflecting scenario specifications and to create images causing detection errors in object detectors. Next steps include quantitatively evaluating validity and realism of generated images and developing methods to automatically identify scenario specifications that degrade object detector performance.
Draft agenda for the 77th session of the Informal Working Group on Wet Grip of Worn Tyres, scheduled for October 28th 2026, remotely. The session will cover welcome and opening remarks, adoption of the agenda, adoption of minutes from the 76th session held on 28 August 2026, the workplan 2025-2026 for C1 tyres and outcome from WTPP, and discussion of next meetings.
Proposed Terms of Reference and Rules of Procedures for the AC.2/WP.29 Informal Group on Prioritization. The IWG-Prio shall develop recommendations on prioritizing activities based on alignment with strategies, regulatory urgency, safety and environmental benefits, resource implications, duplication avoidance, interested parties, and governance of legal instruments. The IWG-Prio shall conduct high-level review of ongoing and proposed activities, develop recommendations regarding initiation and continuation of regulatory activities, identify opportunities to improve efficiency of WP.29 activities including coordination among groups and meeting scheduling, and provide a framework for common understanding of prioritization. The IWG-Prio shall prepare recommendations for non-binding guidance material and proposed procedures for consideration by AC.2 and WP.29 no later than their November 2028 session. The IWG-Prio shall be placed under WP.29, open to all WP.29 participants, chaired by one of the Vice-Chairs of WP.29, and shall operate in English with decisions reached by consensus.
Comments on the structure and content of the draft reference document on artificial intelligence in regulated automotive safety systems. Notes a six-month timeline for adoption by WP.29 in June 2027, with formal submissions due by March 2027. Recommends prioritizing a future-proof repository of information on potential AI-related risks and risk management that can be maintained through standard WP.29 processes. States current regulatory frameworks are sufficient to address unreasonable safety risks from AI use in vehicles. Suggests the document should include introductory explanatory text for non-specialists, clear definitions of technical terms, accessible risk summaries, and a developed risk-management section to support WP.29 regulatory activities.
Proposal to amend para. 6.27.9.1. to exclude direction indicator lamps and dipped-beam headlamps from the 700 cd maximum luminous intensity limitation on or above the HH line when used as answer-back signals, allowing these devices to operate with their original specifications, while maintaining the restriction on front fog lamps, rear fog lamps, and stop lamps.
Proposal to amend para. 2.4.10. to define a pair for vehicles of categories M, N and O as one or more lamp(s) extending from left to right-hand side, amend para. 2.4.11. and 2.4.12. to define single and multiple lamps and interdependent lamp systems marked Y, amend para. 5.5. and its sub-paragraphs to establish requirements for paired lamps including symmetry and photometric characteristics, amend para. 5.7.2.2. and 5.7.2.3. to specify installation requirements for single lamps, delete para. 5.7.2.4. concerning positioning and length requirements, amend para. 5.18.2. regarding assembly of lamps marked D, add para. 4.7.3. to UN Regulation No. 148 requiring a pair to contain at least one light source on each side, and amend para. 4.8.1.3. to clarify photometric measurement procedures when lamps use multiple light sources.
