Response from the UN Office of Legal Affairs transmitted through the WP.29 secretariat concerning the use of different languages in type-approval documents (clarification of Paragraph 3.3 in the proposed UN Regulation No. 0 on whole vehicle type approval). As currently envisioned, the exchange of type-approval information would be made through a secured database (Data Exchange for Type Approval (DETA)) in English. The question was whether this requirement would violate any UN perquisites. The OLA responds that the exclusive use of a given language is up to the parties to the agreement and therefore, the use of English does not present any legal concerns.
