Safety issues regarding power-operated moving components

38. The expert from the Republic of Korea gave a short presentation to start a discussion on safety issues related to power-operated moving components such as doors or seats. GRSP agreed that it would be beneficial to have more data on these types of incidents and requested experts to share any data they would have. The expert from the Kingdom of the Netherlands drew a parallel with some of the issues being dealt with by TF-EDO. He proposed that rather than expanding regulations in reaction to safety issues introduced by innovations, it might be preferable to request that manufacturers demonstrate the safety of such innovations when they are first introduced.

Guidance request on restraint systems with airbags

39. The expert from the Kingdom of the Netherlands introduced informal document GRSP-79-35 to clarify whether restraint systems approved according to UN Regulation No. 16 should bear the word “AIRBAG” in the approval mark in cases where an airbag was part of the restraint system. He argued that this would be helpful for purposes of market surveillance, periodic technical inspections and law enforcement. GRSP concluded that this was not currently required but that it was allowed. Furthermore, it concluded that it would be desirable to make this mandatory but that it would be better to wait for other amendments to this regulation in order to group them in one single proposal.
