The AVLI informal group was formed in April 2013 to update UN Regulation No. 86 in line with technological progress, paying particular attention to improving the visibility of agricultural vehicles. This mandate grew out of discussions held during the 69th session of the Working Party on Lighting and Light-signalling (April 2013) based upon proposals from CEMA and Italy. The group has excluded consideration of any new lighting devices not already specified with UN lighting regulations and of introducing requirements for special warning lamps (UN Regulation No. 65).

The AVLI group expects to submit its final proposals by September 2014 (coinciding with the 72nd GRE session) as amendments to UN R86.
