AI IWG 12th session will be held October 26–27, 2026, at the Zennihon Truck Sogo Kaikan, 3rd Floor, Tokyo. October 26 runs 10:00–17:30 with reception at 18:30; October 27 runs 09:30–17:00. Proposal to amend para. 1.1. to clarify that the Regulation applies to vehicles of categories M1 and N1 with respect to latches, door retention components, latch release controls, and door handles to prevent the risk of occupants being thrown from a vehicle and to ensure evacuation at emergency events, insert new paras. 2.30. to 2.36. defining latch release control, door handle, retractable door handle, unlock, unlatch, door opening, and power loss, insert new para. 5.4. establishing exterior and interior door operation requirements, insert new para. 6.4. establishing requirements for latch release controls and door handles to be intuitive and to remain capable of operating after power loss for at least 60 minutes, and insert new Annex 7 establishing a power loss test procedure to verify door opening systems remain functional following an emergency event leading to loss of the vehicle’s ordinary power supply.
Proposal to insert new paragraphs in Section I providing background on GTR No. 1, discussions on door operation requirements including functional distinctions between unlocking, unlatching and opening, intuitive operation, continued operation after power loss, interior egress, exterior rescue access, retractable door handles, power-assisted door opening, and testing procedures, insert new paras. 3.25. to 3.31. defining latch release control, door handle, retractable door handle, unlock, unlatch, door opening, and power loss, insert new para. 4.3. establishing exterior and interior door operation requirements for doors providing direct occupant access, insert new para. 5.4. specifying that operating methods of latch release controls and door handles shall be intuitive, that power-assisted latch release controls shall remain capable of unlatching doors after power loss for at least 60 minutes by secondary mechanical means, active secondary power supply, or fail-safe systems, that power-assisted unlocking and unlatching controls shall remain functional after power loss for at least 60 minutes, that power-assisted door opening systems shall remain capable of opening doors by manual force after power loss, that door handles including retractable handles shall provide accessible gripping features after power loss, and that unlock means and latch release controls shall be unobstructed and directly visible from occupant positions and not located in storage devices, and insert new Annex 6 establishing power loss testing procedures for interior and exterior door operations with 60-minute waiting periods and 10-minute testing windows requiring repeated opening cycles up to five times per door.
The agenda includes welcome and opening remarks, introduction of participants and organizations, adoption of the draft agenda, review of minutes from the 13th session of June 2026, review of Terms of Reference from GRBP 78th Session (GRBP-78-13), UN R51 matters, review of report to GRBP, and determination of the date and place of the next meeting, scheduled for 20–22 October in Barcelona, Spain.
RD-ASEP includes technical background and vehicle application guidance for Real Driving Additional Sound Emission Provisions under UN R51.03 Supplement 7 Annex 9 for the mandatory monitoring phase between 07/2023 and 06/2024. RD-ASEP, referenced in GRB-68-03, applies to vehicles of category M1 and N1 equipped with internal combustion engines and covers engine speeds up to 95% of typical driving in speed ranges applicable to sub-urban conditions. A Sound Expectation Model predicts vehicle sound levels at randomly selected operation conditions by splitting measured pass-by test results into tyre rolling sound, mechanical no-load sound, and dynamic sound components, using reference values from Annex 3 type approval tests with logarithmic functions and parameter table slopes. Compliance assessment allows measured sound to exceed calculated expected sound by not more than 2 dB for maximum two test runs out of fifteen. Model validation with 2024 monitoring database confirms the tyre rolling sound and power train sound models represent well approved tyres and engines, with less than 5 dB typically separating pass-by run results from the limit.
