Working Party on Automated/Autonomous and Connected Vehicles (GRVA) (7th session, 21–25 September 2020)

70. The GRVA Chair reported on the results achieved by GRVA during its virtual informal session in lieu of the seventh session, held in accordance with the special procedures defined by the Executive Committee of UNECE. He informed that the decisions made by GRVA in September were submitted after the session for adoption by silence procedure. (For details, see the note by the Chair of the session ECE/TRANS/WP.29/GRVA/7).

71. The GRVA chair informed WP.29 that GRVA endorsed the principles listed in the WP.1 document ECE/TRANS/WP.1/2020/3, prepared by the representative of Canada and recommended it to WP.29.

72. The GRVA chair reported that GRVA had consulted AC.2 on the way forward for dealing (a) with amendment proposals to UN Regulation No. 157 in relation with the existing activities of the IWG on Functional Requirement for Automated Vehicles, (b) with amendment proposals to Automatically Commanded Steering Functions (ACSF), (c) with amendment proposals related to “hands off “ level 2 and level 2 plus and (d) with Artificial Intelligence.

73. The GRVA chair informed WP.29 on the GRVA activities on Electro-Mechanical Braking systems and endurance braking performance applicable to some vehicles of Category M3, N3 and vehicles subject to Agreement concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road (ADR), which are important developments to support the electrification of the goods transport. GRVA prepared an amendment proposal regarding endurance braking for Battery Electric Vehicles, which will be tabled for adoption in March 2021. WP.29 requested the secretariat to inform the Working Party on the Transport of Dangerous Good about these activities (WP.15).

74. WP.29 endorsed the proposal to restart activities on AEBS for heavy vehicles and supported the establishment of an IWG on AEBS for Heavy Vehicles.

75. WP.29 discussed the way forward for amendments to UN Regulation No. 152 and the two alternatives prepared by GRVA (WP.29-182-19). WP.29 requested the secretariat to prepare a draft new 02 series of amendments to UN Regulation No. 152, based on ECE/TRANS/WP.29/GRVA/2020/27 for consideration and vote at the March 2021 session. WP.29 invited GRVA to review that document at its December 2020 session.

76. WP.29 noted the very busy agenda of GRVA and therefore requested the secretariat to organize an ad-hoc GRVA session on 14-16 December 2020, following AC.2’s recommendation. WP.29 agreed that only an official provisional agenda would be prepared and that GRVA would work on the basis of informal or existing official documents.

77. WP.29 endorsed informal documents WP.29-182-05 and WP.29-182-06. WP.29 requested the secretariat to issue them with an official symbol for the March 2021 session of WP.29.

78. WP.29 congratulated Mr. Richard Damm (Germany) on his re-election as Chair of GRVA for 2021 as well as Ms. Chen Chunmei (China) and Mr. Takao Onoda (Japan) on their re-election as Vice-Chairs for 2021.
