Proposal for a new UN Regulation on the approval of devices for reversing motion and motor vehicles with regard to the driver’s awareness of vulnerable road users behind vehicles. The purpose of this Regulation is to provide the provisions for reversing motion concerning on awareness of vulnerable road users proximity. UN Regulation No. 46 provides provisions for indirect vision of motor vehicles. This Regulation expands driver’s vision or awareness for vehicle rear direction when in reversing motion. Therefore, some requirements of this Regulation may be satisfied by devices complying with UN Regulation No. 46.

Working draft submitted for information regarding a proposed new UN Regulation for the type approval of devices to improve driver awareness of vulnerable road users when performing reversing maneuvers. UN R46 contains provisions for indirect vision; this proposal seeks to expand the driver’s awareness, including visibility of VRU to the rear of the vehicle. Some requirements of this proposed regulation could be satisfied via approval under UN R46.

Proposal for Class IX devices to enable approval of front and lateral close-proximity passenger-side vision devices based upon current standards in Japan. The purpose is to address VRU safety risks on narrow roads and other conditions where cyclists and pedestrians must share the lane with vehicles. Final report on a Washington State Transit Insurance Pool (WSTIP) pilot program to assess the Rosco/Mobileye Shield+ system collision avoidance warning system (CAWS) specifically designed for transit buses. This project involved field testing and evaluation of the CAWS in revenue service over a three-month period. The system provides alerts and warnings to the bus driver for the following conditions that could lead to a collision:

1. changing lanes without activating a turn signal (lane departure warning was disabled for this pilot),
2. exceeding posted speed limit,
3. monitoring headway with the vehicle leading the bus,
4. forward vehicle collision warning, and
5. pedestrian or cyclist collision warning in front of, or alongside the bus.
