This regulation establishes uniform approval provisions for Advanced Emergency Braking Systems (AEBS) fitted to motor vehicles of categories M1 and N1. The AEBS shall automatically detect imminent forward collisions with vehicles, pedestrians, or bicycles, provide driver warning, and activate vehicle braking to avoid or mitigate collision severity. The system must meet specified performance requirements under defined test conditions for car-to-car, car-to-pedestrian, and car-to-bicycle scenarios. Requirements include collision warning provision, emergency braking of at least 5.0 m/s², active speed ranges, driver interruption capability, deactivation controls, and warning indications. Testing procedures, vehicle conditions, target specifications, and virtual testing provisions are specified.
Document confirms homework points for consideration of night-time requirements for car-to-pedestrian scenarios in UN R152. Topics include vehicle categories M1 and N1, crossing and longitudinal collision types, farside/nearside pedestrian direction, pedestrian walking speed of 5 km/h, lighting conditions, collision points at 25%, 50%, and 75%, dummy types, vehicle activation speeds of 30–60 km/h without obstruction and 40–50 km/h with obstruction, and speed reduction. Daytime requirements discussion covers car-to-car speed reduction at 80 km/h, collision point revision, and car-to-pedestrian speed reduction review based on current technology.
Terms of Reference and Rules of Procedure for the Informal Working Group on Prioritization (IWG-Prio). The IWG-Prio shall develop recommendations on prioritization criteria including regulatory urgency, safety, environmental, fuel efficiency and security benefits, resource implications, field data availability, technology maturity, and alignment with ITC and WP.29 strategies. The group shall conduct a high-level review of ongoing and proposed activities and develop recommendations regarding initiation and continuation of regulatory activities. The IWG-Prio shall identify opportunities to improve efficiency of WP.29 activities including coordination among groups, meeting scheduling, digitalization, information sharing, and establishment, continuation, review and closure of working groups and task forces. The group shall prepare recommendations for consideration by AC.2 and WP.29 at their November 2028 session.
Note by the secretariat reporting on results of the 131st GRSG session presented to WP.29 in June 2026. GRSG adopted revised Terms of Reference for the Informal Working Group on Driver Distraction and Drowsiness Warning Systems, extending its mandate until October 2028 to finalize the 01 series of amendments to UN R182 and UN R183. WP.29 recommended to AC.1 the adoption of 36 amendment packages to UN Regulations under GRSG responsibility. Mongolia acceded to the 1958 Agreement on 29 April 2026, with entry into force on 28 June 2026. WP.29 endorsed continued work on IWVTA and DETA.
Proposal to amend para. 1.4. to clarify that recording requirements depend on availability of the trigger or data element itself rather than sensor format capabilities, amend para. 5.3.1.2. to permit the EDR to write Last Stop trigger data in volatile memory only, accommodating at least five most recent stops to be overwritten on a first-in first-out basis until another trigger occurs or the vehicle master control switch is deactivated, and amend paras. 2.5., 2.48. and 2.49. for clarity and consistency with UN R160.
Proposal to amend para. 1.4. to clarify requirements for recording data elements when sensors or systems are not operational or cannot meet specified format requirements, amend para. 2.20. to redefine engine throttle as driver-requested acceleration torque demand, amend para. 2.73. to define trigger activated, amend para. 5.4.3. to clarify crash test data element requirements and specify impact severity levels by reference to UN Regulations Nos. 94, 95, and 137, insert new paras. 12.12.–12.17. containing transitional provisions with applicability dates from entry into force through 1 September 2035, and amend Table 1 in Annex 4 to modify data element recording intervals, sample rates, ranges, accuracy, and resolution specifications, add new data elements including vulnerable road user secondary safety system warning indicator status, corrective steering function status, emergency steering function status, automatically commanded steering function category status, accident emergency call system status, advanced driver distraction warning, driver control assistance system driver monitoring system warning data, driver drowsiness and attention warning, and time to collision, and clarify footnote references.
The document describes automated shuttles as vehicles designed for public transport with autonomy by design, typically with fewer than 10 seats, constructed like Class A buses, and often limited in maximum speed or bidirectional. Automated shuttles are deployed globally and already comply with most technical requirements for M₂/M₃ vehicles except some UN R107 requirements and bidirectional aspects. Current UN vehicle categories are incompatible with shuttles: M₁ does not have provisions for standing passengers, and shuttles cannot be granted approvals to most UN Regulations because they have fewer than 10 seats. Three options for categorization are presented: a new category M₄, a new class of M₂/M₃ (Class C), or redefinition of M₂/M₃ Class A. A workshop is proposed for 4 December in Paris to determine whether an international category or class is necessary.
Minutes of the eleventh meeting of the IWG on EV/HFCV Retrofit Systems held on 9 September 2026. The group adopted the provisional agenda and reviewed the draft UN Regulation on EV/HFCV retrofit systems. Key discussions addressed the regulatory concept for approval of the Electric Powertrain Retrofit System combined with installation requirements and vehicle testing, vehicle scope including possible exclusion of older vehicles and those subject to UN Regulations Nos. 155 and 156, and confirmation that HFCV provisions would remain as placeholders for later development. The updated working document will be circulated before submission to GRPE in October 2026.
